“Expanding our Equity Lens to Support Students in Aligned Math Pathways”
Frank Savina,
Charles A. Dana Center

Over the course of the last decade, our national math community has made great strides in improving student outcomes in gateway level mathematics courses through the implementation of math pathways and co-requisite courses at scale. As we look to the future, what can we, as math faculty, do to build upon the success of these national initiatives? How do we centralize equity in our classrooms to ensure our educational systems are inclusive of marginalized students and students experiencing poverty?  Hear Frank’s Mexican American perspective on promoting equity in the classroom and empowering students by challenging dominant narratives.

“Collaborating and Gathering Resources to Support Students More Holistically”
Tammi Perez-Rice,
Post-Secondary Course Program Specialist, Charles A. Dana Center

With a breakout session dedicated to diving deeper into expanding our equity lens, participants will use this time to collaborate with others to gather resources, ideas, and encouragement in supporting their students more holistically.  Four stations will be provided with the expectation of participants attending at least two.  Ideally, the two stations visited should be a station you want to learn more about, while the other is a station you feel you have insight and knowledge to share.

The stations are as follows:
  •   Supporting Intrinsic Motivation within a Mathematics Course
  •   Promising Co-requisite Math Practices
  •   Culturally Responsive Teaching in a Math Course
  •   Active Assessments in a Math Course: Taking Active Learning to the Next Level

Participants will leave this breakout session empowered to continue the work started within this convening. This session is designed to model the need for autonomy in adult learners as well as support asset-minded teaching.
